Lyrebird Hill Anna Romer Brian Grey 9781486297061 Books Reviews

Ruby’s world is rocked when she discovers her sister Jamie did not fall to her death (18 years earlier) as she’d been led to believe, but was murdered. And Ruby’s left with the horror that her mother and others think she may have been involved.

Determined to find out if she was responsible for her sister’s death Ruby decides to travel back to her childhood home at Lyrebird Hill to try to revive deeply buried memories.

Also unfolding in parallel a century before is the story of Ruby’s ancestors, including Brenna Magavin.

Brenna agrees to marry a friend of her father so the family may keep her beloved home. She moves to Tasmania but continues to pine for her family and friends at Lyrebird Hill.

Before long both Ruby and Brenna are uncovering secrets which could endanger their lives.

In the acknowledgements of Lyrebird Hill, Anna Romer tells us how her agent warned her the second novel is always the hardest one to write. You wouldn't know it by this book. Anna has pulled off a masterpiece with this novel although this was obviously no flash in the pan, this was down to pure talent, an immense knowledge of her subject and the setting and just plain hard work.

Right from the start the descriptions, which are so quintessentially Australian, draw you in and transport you to Ruby and Brenna's world (although I did wonder whether a reader from another country would know that Ruby slipped on some jandals or flip-flops instead of a piece of underwear at one point). I found I wasn't reading a book, I was living in the character's world. It is years since a book held me like this one did, so much so that when I went to bed after reaching the half-way point, the characters of the book featured in my dreams.

This isn't a feel good novel, it is filled with pain, heartbreak, betrayal and hopelessness. Offsetting this is the beauty of the bush in the Northern Tablelands of New South Wales and Tasmania which Anna paints in your mind through her wonderfully detailed descriptions. As with a fine meal, it has just the right mix of sweet and sour.

Anna manages to seamlessly weave the stories of two women into the one tale although they are set four generations and 115 years apart. It is a murder mystery which flows smoothly but is dotted with clues right the way through and finishes with several twists. I was able to anticipate all of the twists bar one however in hindsight there were clues to this one earlier in the book as well.

Anna delves into a bit of psychology as she explores what I think is the main theme of her book, how we tend to build a mask at the expense of our true nature. I think these words uttered by one of her characters pretty much sums up the theme
"I suppose I mean the spirit in us. The good. The truth that lies beneath the false face we show to the world. We aren't like those orchids or vines you talked about. We are complicated. We are joy-seeking beings — and yet we bring harm to one another, lie and mistreat and prey on others' weaknesses for our own needs. But deception is its own reward. The only ones we truly hurt are ourselves. We get distracted by the mask, and forget that our true nature is love—"

I enjoyed Anna's first novel Thornwood House but I think she has done an even better job with Lyrebird Hill. She has set herself a high standard for her next novel but I am confident that Anna will surprise us once again. I can't wait.
I enjoyed Anna Romer's first novel, Thornwood House, enough to download her second novel, Lyrebird Hill. I found that the similarities between the two were so striking; almost too striking. I understand that the writer writes within a genre, within a genre, but I found myself confusing some of the details, since I had just finished one, when I started the other. There is an old family estate, family secrets, murder, aboriginal history, secret letters and diaries, and the list goes on. Despite that, the book is very, very well written.

As with her first, she knows her craft and is very deliberate. Some might think that the story is a slow read, but it is involved and complicated enough that it needs to be as deliberately paced as it is. I was enjoying the story, until the very end. The last hour seemed rushed and a bit unbelievable. I know, it is fiction, but some of the details at the end of the story seem a bit too hard to swallow. I wondered if she ran out of steam. I won't list the details that irked me, because it would make this review a "spoiler". After enjoying the story for hours and hours; I was disappointed with the ending.

I listened to the Audible version and I found the narrator pleasant enough. If the author releases another, I will buy it. If you like Kate Morton, or Kimberly Freeman; you will probably like this book. I gave this book four stars the characters are, for the most part, very well developed and the plot is well paced, until the end.
It was fantastic. I couldn't put it down.
Great story! Mystery is interweaved throughout. Description of Australian Bush very authentic. Could not put this book down!
Beautifully written. A real gem for a botany enthusiast or a fan of family tragedy.
Loved it.
A well written novel, based in Australia, with an interesting twist in it. I look forward to other books written by this author.
