I finished it! Started it last night right after download, left the computer up all night so I didn't lose it, and started in again this am (7 - 9 AM.). It is great! So much useful information, and so many good tips are included. Using the envelope system for budgeting food costs and building a supply/stockpile provides clear and easy to understand directions, instructions and examples for one to follow. Use of your stockpile and expanding your options to use what you have and to purchase more to further reduce your food costs is explained. Use of the snowball method in food purchase and use; genius. Different cooking methods and conversions are included. Uses of spice families, instead of single use spices, to expand your options. Recipes! You know you were looking for that. I don't know how I would use them, because I can't figure out how to print any of this out, but there are lots and they are of things you would actually prepare and eat. Necessary pots and pans and kitchen tools are a very short list. I would buy this as a book, and use it on a regular basis, along with my notes in blue ink and yellow highlighter; I would also purchase it as a gift. This could also be used as a wonderful teaching and demonstration tool for those teaching budgeting, eating while digging out of a hole, and back to basics cooking. And it is all done with a small budget.Product details

Great book, easy read, and SOOOO many good ideas!!! I am so excited to save money in many new ways! It was very easy to read, and I really appreciate the way it is laid out. Really like the access to free printables to make it easy to follow the suggestions! Some of my favorite parts (and ones I found most helpful personally) were the detailed and easy to follow grocery budget, the "Setting Up a Pantry" section, the "Eating Healthy on a Budget" section, and the "Frugal Recipes" section. Well thought through and detailed information, so reading it will definitely NOT be a waste of time. Definitely recommend this book!
This truly is a frugal book and it's easily calculated up or down based on your budget. The idea I'm intrigued with the most is flavor families and that is one wonderful section. If you love a certain type of food this book makes it easier to stock your pantry. This is the first time in over 6 years that I've been impressed with a book that claimed frugality and I read a lot of them because I work in Assistance. I recommend this to everyone.
Concise summary of how to reduce your grocery bill. I think $10/week is a bit of a stretch unless you have a garden or have friends with gardens and fruit growing in their yards. But it will help you and your family eat well for a fraction of what others are spending, garden or no garden.
Though I don't have the same kind of lifestyle as the author, it gave me ideas of what I could do to cut down our food expenses. She includes a lot of charts and examples. Plus she includes something I have not seen before - different kinds of foods that you can make from different cultures or taste families as she calls it. I have been actually listening to this rather then reading it because much of my "free" time is during my daily 1.5 hour commute. I'm glad it allows me to listen to it. Thank you to the author for helping my family.
This book's title drew my interest because I am a senior citizen living on a fixed income. This book, however, is mostly for those who have time on their side.
For people who still have most of their lives ahead of them, establishing a lifestyle similar to the one practiced in the book would not be out of reach. There might be time and resources available to do a relocation to a part of the country where more of the things mentioned are available; to make a different choice as to what sort of property to buy, and in what location; to make many decisions that for some of us have already been made decades ago.
In the book, operating a hobby farm with dairy and meat animals you butcher and process yourself, having eggs from your own chickens, and growing a vegetable garden, all feature prominently, as well as canning (pressure and hot water bath), making your own cheese and butter, and getting significant amounts of food, including meat, for free.
Having a well-stocked pantry is the primary recommendation to which our situation is well suited, and I have made that a practice for years. All are good ideas; it is just that they are not all practical ideas for everyone to try.
This book has something for everyone! Those who enjoy the challenge of making the most of every single penny they spend will surely appreciate Bethany's attention to detail. She includes in her calculations everything from the cost of actual products to the cost of water, feed and supplies needed to grow animals/produce. She offers seemingly endless options to find free or low-cost food in today's world.
For those simply looking for a few good tips to bring down their weekly grocery bill, there is also much to offer. Bethany's practical advice regarding taking advantage of coupons/discounts, food preservation and eliminating waste is invaluable! She has obviously done her homework and is living what she's writing.
I enjoyed the easy-to-read conversational style of this book and the practical, unapologetic advice offered. However, the best part of this book is the 'food families ' information and the recipes included in the back of the book. What a bonus!
